Greetings from Pheriche again!

We just returned from the training summit, here's how it went:

On the 26th (Wed) we left Pheriche, we reached Lobuche east base camp by noon, and set our tent.

But we returned back to Thukla (4700m) to sleep, acclimatize better and to not reach too high too soon.

On the 27th, we reached the base camp and slept on 5 020m altitude.

On the 28th, the next day, we moved our gear to the advanced base camp, at 5 270m.

Finally on the 29th, early in the morning, we reached the Lobuche east top, 6 040m: left the camp at 01:40, on summit at 06:15, that makes 4,5h for the ascent.

The weather had been ugly the previous day, so we were a bit dubious for the success of our summiting attempt, but in the end the day ended up being one of the best for the weather in this period!

We were first to reach the summit, behind us appr.20 westerners with their climbing sherpas.

(..and, after seeing first hand the method of fixed ropes used here a lot - hmmh - alpine style is our style.)

The route begins with a mixed terraine, followed by a glacier part. The last section is a quite long snowy slope, under the SW ridge. The final part is a steep 150 m face around 60 degrees.

(Technically, the route is pretty much on the same level with Mont Blanc Three Summits route)

And so it happened that since we were so happy for our Lobuche experience we decided to get a permit for the Island Peak (6189m) as well!

So tomorrow morning we'll leave Pheriche and head for Island Peak base camp.

And since we are lacking some stuff for the higher altitudes, we still need to quickly visit Namche before settling down in Ama Dablam base camp. That will probably be around the 5th-7th.

In this case, we will have one week left for the Ama Dablam summiting - fingers crossed for good weather!

Siamo appena tornati dalla vetta di acclimatamento, ed ecco come è andata:

Il 26 (mercoledì) abbiamo lasciato Pheriche, abbiamo raggiunto il campo base del Lobuche Est a mezzogiorno, e abbiamo piantato la nostra tenda.

Ma siamo tornati a Thukla (4700 m) per dormire, acclimatarci meglio e non arrivare troppo in alto troppo presto.

Il 27, abbiamo raggiunto il campo base e dormito a quota 5020m.

Il 28, il giorno dopo, abbiamo spostato la nostra attrezzatura al campo base avanzato, a 5 270m.

Infine il 29, la mattina presto, abbiamo raggiunto la cima est del Lobuche, 6 040m: abbiamo lasciato il campo all' 01:40 e alle 06:15 eravamo sulla cima, per un tempo di salita di 4,5 h.

Il tempo era stato brutto il giorno precedente, quindi eravamo un po ' dubbiosi sul successo del nostro tentativo per la cima, ma alla fine la giornata è stata una di quelle con il tempo migliore di questo periodo.

Siamo stati i primi a raggiungere la vetta, dietro di noi una ventina di

occidentali con i loro sherpa.

(.. e, dopo aver visto in prima persona il metodo delle corde fisse tanto usato qui - hmmh – lo stile alpino è il nostro stile).

Il percorso inizia su terreno misto , seguito da un percorso su ghiacciaio. L'ultima sezione è un pendio nevoso piuttosto lungo, sotto la cresta sud-ovest. La parte finale è una ripida parete di 150 m con un'inclinazione di circa 60 gradi.

(Tecnicamente, il percorso è più o meno sullo stesso livello con quello per le Tre Cime sul Monte Bianco ).

E così, poichè eravamo così felici per la nostra esperienza sul Lobuche abbiamo deciso di ottenere un permesso anche per l'Island Peak (6189m)!

Così domani mattina lasceremo Pheriche e ci dirigeremo verso il campo base dell'Island Peak.

E poiché ci mancano alcune cose per l'alta quota, abbiamo ancora bisogno di tornare rapidamente a Namche prima di dirigerci al campo base dell' Ama Dablam. Il che avverrà probabilmente intorno al 5-7.

In questo caso ci resterà una settimana per scalare l' Ama Dablam .

Today should be the day Alberto and Jonna reach the summit of Lobuche. We should have news from them tomorrow, when they return to Pheriche.

Apparently the weather changed slightly, and forecasts for this afternoon were of moderate snow, with increasing winds and really low temperatures.

Friday on Lobuche should be a clear, sunny day.
Temperatures high up the mountain will range between -10° and -14° C.

This morning Alberto and Jonna left for Lobuche base camp. Altitude gain for the dai will be around 700 mt, and they should be arriving in these hours (they left about 6 hours ago).

This is a bit unorthodox, as the rule would be to gain more or less 400 mt a day, but having spent two days at 4200 mt with no problems, they are feeling strong enough to get crampons on and pick up their ice axes. Yesterday they observed a team climbing the Lobuche ridge. They will probably move up to advanced camp (5200 mt) tomorrow and go for the summit on Friday.

Questa mattina Alberto e Jonna sono partiti per il campo base del Lobuche. Guadagneranno circa 700 mt di elevazione, e dovrebbero essere in arrivo in queste ore (sono partiti circa 6 ore fa).

Questa scelta è poco ortodossa, perchè la regola sarebbe di guadagnare più o meno 400 metri di elevazione al giorno, ma avendo trascorso due giorni a 4200 metri senza problemi, si sentono abbastanza forti da indossare i ramponi e impugnare le piccozze. Ieri hanno osservato un gruppo di scalatori sulla cresta del Lobuche. Probabilmente loro saliranno al campo avanzato (5200 mt) domani, e tenteranno la cima venerdì.

Last day of rest in Pheriche

We spent the last two days in Pheriche, a village at 4.260 m. We really appreciate this village as a comprehensive view point on all of our goals. We can easily see all the summits we have in our agenda. To the south we have the face of Ama Dablam and to the north we can study the route to Lobouche Est and the rocky face on witch we would like to climb a new route through the binoculars. Today we will spend relaxing, and finally tomorrow we will be moving to Lobouche base camp, at an altitude of around 4.900 m. The porters are afraid it might be too long for a daily trek, but these concerns are sometimes part of their job. From base camp we will move to an advanced camp climbing a 200 m rocky face. The day after should be our summit day...lets hope for the best!

Abbiamo passato gli ultimi due giorni a Pheriche, un villaggio a 4,260 m. Questo villaggio è perfetto come punto panoramico globale su tutti i nostri obiettivi. Possiamo facilmente vedere tutte le cime che abbiamo in programma. A sud abbiamo la faccia dell' Ama Dablam e a nord siamo in grado di studiare, attraverso il binocolo, il percorso della via al Lobouche Est e la parete rocciosa sulla quale vorremmo tracciare una nuova via. Oggi ci rilasseremo, e finalmente domani ci sposteremo al campo base del Lobouche, ad un'altitudine di circa 4,900 m. I portatori temono che potrebbe essere un trekking troppo lungo da fare in giornata, ma a volte queste preoccupazioni sono parte del loro lavoro. Dal campo base ci sposteremo ad un campo avanzato dopo aver scalato una parete rocciosa di 200 m. Il giorno dopo dovrebbe essere il nostro giorno sulla vetta ... Speriamo!

Tonight in the Lobuche area there will be rain and snow at higher altitudes, while tomorrow and on wednesday the weather should be good.
Conditions will worsen on thursday, with light to moderate snowfall, most intense on thursday afternoon.

So, while we wait for news from Alberto and Jonna that should be reaching Lobuche base camp tomorrow, it will probably be of some interest to know that October 2011 might break trekking records for the area of Khumbu, and with around 10000 visitors (climbers not included) soon survival tips for Himalayan travel might include booking hotels, lodges and tent space in advance.

Also, what are prices like in the area? A good approximation for a quick exchange rate is to consider Euro prices as about 9% of of rupee prices.

A porter costs around 850 rupees per day (more if you hire them for one way, less for round trips), a coffee will cost around 100 rupees and a Mountain Hardware high altitude down jacket can be found for 150 euros.

Hotel prices for a main course for dinner are around 350-450 rupees.

One more day in Namche (but not being idle)

We decided to stay one more night in Namche, and went for an acclimatation hike up to 4100 m altitude, on a ridge above Khunde village (Tenzing Norgay&Hillary hospital and school).

We both felt good.

Tomorrow we will be heading for Pangboche, the day after that we will reach Pheriche, and then we should reach the Lobuche base camp.

We also heard a bit of rumors about how things go in Ama Dablam: commercial expeditions tend to send their climbing sherpas to the mountain well ahead of others, to "reserve" places for their tents in the upper camps.

(i.e. Camp 2 is a tough one, it has places for just a couple of tents at a time).

Also, if one wants to use the fixed ropes placed there, one needs to be prepared to pay.

Looks like most of the people climbing the most famous and popular mountains (like Ama) go for commercial expeditions, while independent ones prefer not so crowded peaks for this reason..

So lets see what will happen.

There is only two of us and one tent, after all.

And we are very optimistic.

Abbiamo deciso di fermarci una notte in più a Namche, e siamo andati a fare un'escursione di acclimatamento fino a 4100 m di altitudine, su una cresta sopra il villaggio di Khunde (dove si trovano l'ospedale e la scuola dedicati a Hillary e Tenzing Norgay).

Entrambi siamo stati bene.

Domani andremo in direzione di Pangboche, il giorno dopo raggiungeremo Pheriche, e alla fine della tappa successiva dovremmo raggiungere il campo base del Lobuche.

Abbiamo anche sentito un po 'di voci su come vanno le cose all' Ama Dablam: le spedizioni commerciali tendono a mandare i loro sherpa in alto sulla montagna ben prima degli altri, in modo da "riservare" i posti per le loro tende nei campi superiori.

(ad esempio, il Campo 2 è difficile, ha posti solo per un paio di tende alla volta).

In Namche Bazaar, heading for Lobuche

Greetings from Namche Bazaar! (altitude 3 440m)

We reached the village yesterday from Lukla (usually it takes 2 days for the trek, but we felt acclimatized enough already)

It took us 7 hours with breaks.

Also, the weather was perfect - not too hot, nor too chilly.

That changed during the night though. It's been raining quite hard, and now you can see a snow cover reaching quite low (i.e. our next pit stop Tengboche). The weather looks quite unsettled for next weeks.

We will stay in Namche 1 or 2 more nights, and then move towards Lobuche.

Reaching Lobuche BC should take 2-3 days.

On the 30th the BC of Ama Dablam should be seeing us arrive.

What else.. well, we haven't seen our porters with all our things since yesterday morning. Towels, contact lenses, warm clothes.. are on their way, we guess.

Looks like the bad weather caught our porters yesterday, and they couldnt keep up with our pace (well, the gear IS super heavy).

What day is it?

We dont remember anymore, dates dont matter. At the moment there is just our climbing program.

Days in Kathmandu went fast, purchasing missing equipment and meeting random friends*

One of them was Tomas, a Finnish-Indian fella working for local teleoperator Ncell.

Thanks to them, it's now possible to call home even from the top of Everest (or why not update your FB status with your smartphone, 3g is strong there as well ;) ).

On the Ama Dablam route the network may not be as strong, but will see.

Today's big mission was to arrange our stuff with five different purposes: what to leave in KTM while we're on the mountains,

what to carry with us while trekking, what to take to Lobuche peak for acclimatization, what for Ama Dablam, and, finally, what to pack for the ascent of the new route near Cho La pass.

About the weather, we heard it will turn very cold after the rain of the next days.

So we will be carrying all layers of clothing with us.

Now it's 00:00 local time, we're all set up, tomorrow morning we wake up at 5am and fly to Lukla.

Let's see what they will say about our heavy luggages this time..

So soon, we're off to Khumbu. Dhal-bat and yak cheese, here we come!

*) Fabio Iacchini a mountain guide from Macugnaga and even Icaro, a guide from Trieste (stange situation...we hardly meet in Trieste, but here we are, in Kathmandu) and two other mountain loving (and lovable) friends Andrea and Fede, who just came down from Island Peak summit. Waiting to see more familiar faces on the road..Kathmandu seems like an eastern version of Chamonix or Cortina - it's a hub for mountain people here.

Sulla via di salita all' Ama Dablam la copertura della rete potrebbe non essere così forte, vedremo.

La grande missione di oggi è stata quella di organizzare le nostre cose con cinque diversi obiettivi in mente: cosa lasciare a KTM mentre siamo in montagna, cosa portare con noi durante il trekking, cosa portarsi dietro a Lobuche, la cima che affronteremo per acclimatarci, cosa portare per l'ascesa dell' Ama Dablam, e infine, cosa mettere negli zaini per la salita della nuova via di roccia nei pressi del passo Cho La.

Riguardo al meteo, abbiamo sentito che arriverà molto freddo dopo le piogge dei prossimi giorni.

Così ci porteremo dietro tutti gli strati di abbigliamento.

Ora sono le 00.00, ora locale, è tutto pronto, domani mattina ci svegliamo alle 5 del mattino e prendiamo il volo per Lukla.

Vediamo cosa diranno a proposito del peso dei nostri bagagli questa volta ..

Così presto e saremo diretti verso il Khumbu. Dhal-bat e formaggio di yak, arriviamo!

Although the only way to be certain of the weather conditions in any given place is to actually be there, the current conditions and weather forecast for the next few days can be useful to give an idea of the conditions all the climbers heading for Ama Dablam in these days will be facing:

According to meteoexploration.com, in the next days all the areas around Everest, Lohtse and Ama Dablam will be subject to snowfall and a decrease in temperature.

Freezing level should drop from about 4900mt (today's level) to about 4000mt on Saturday.

More detailed information can be found on mountain-forecast.com, but they basically come to the same conclusions, a decrease in temperatures and snow throughout the rest of the week. Rain below 4000 mt, heavy rain in Thursday and during the night.

The weather should clear starting on Sunday.

I just received news from Alberto and Jonna, they arrived yesterday. Apparently there are having some problems accessing internet, so communications are a little slow, but hopefully all that will be solved soon.

Anyway, here is what they have been up to.

Mon 17.10.

Finally in KTM!

And this is how we got here:

TRIESTE 16.10. at 8:18 by train to Milan Centrale > 13:45 > by bus to Linate airport 14:20 > flight delay 2h, off to London by British Airways 18:10 > landing in London at 19:30 > connecting flight to Delhi at 21:05 > Landing in Delhi at 10am > connecting flight

> KATHMANDU 17.10. at 15:25.

(total traveling time 25,5h)

Ahh Kathmandu.

Chaotic traffic, small roads with souvenier & climbing shops, all covered by head exploding car horns.

Good food, endless tipping.

(by the way, euro is strong here at the moment, no need to carry dollars anymore)

Due to the bad weather in the last couple of days, flights to Lukla are now delayed and overbooked. Tomorrow there will be 25 flights leaving there!

(good times for the lodge runners in Khumbu valley..)

And seems like KTM is full of anxious mountain people now, just waiting for their turn to leave...that doesn't bother us though, in the next days will be busy with final preparations. Medical equipment, some gear.. and then we should be off.

We still haven't decided about the acclimatation - looks like we're trying a smaller peak before Ama Dablam, but haven't made up our minds on which one it will be.

Island Peak or Lobuche are the most probable choices.

Anyway looks like we won't feel lonely at Ama Dablam. 15 expeditions are heading for the same peak now. We also met a friend, Michele, a guide from Cadore.

(He will be leaving for Lukla the same day we do, and after around ten days of trekking he will guide his small Italian group to Ama as well)

By the way, it seems that in Katmandu there are a lot of Italians, mostly for trekking.

After arriving today, we enjoyed some refreshments at the "expedition bar" Tom and Jerry, where usally climbers meet before&after expeditions. And now it's time for good night's tight sleep.

Finalmente a KTM!

Ed ecco come ci siamo arrivati:

TRIESTE: partenza il 16 ottobre alle 8:18 con il treno per Milano Centrale. Dalle 13:45 in bus per l'aeroporto di Linate, dove alle 14:20 scopriamo del ritardo di 2 ore del volo per Londra della British Airways. Partiamo alle 18.10. L'arrivo a Londra è alle 19:30 e la coincidenza per Delhi parte alle 21.05. Atterriamo a Delhi alle 10 del mattino successivo e finalmente, alle 15.25 prendiamo il volo per KATHMANDU, dopo 25, 5 ore tra aeroporti e voli.

Ahh Kathmandu.

Traffico caotico, strade strette piene di negozi di souvenir e di materiale da alpinismo, il tutto condito dall'assordante suono dei clacson.

Buona cucina, e mance in abbondanza.

(A proposito, al momento, qui, l'euro è forte e non c'è bisogno di portare dollari).

A causa del maltempo che c'è stato negli ultimi due giorni, i voli per Lukla sono stati rimandati, e adesso sono tutti prenotati. Domani ci saranno 25 voli in partenza!

(Buone notizie per i gestori di rifugio nella valle del Khumbu ..)

Al momento sembra proprio che KTM sia piena di appassionati di montagna, che non aspettano altro che il loro turno per partire... ma la cosa non ci disturba, del resto nei prossimi giorni saremo impegnati con gli ultimi preparativi. Qualche medicinale e i pezzi mancati dell'attrezzatura .. e poi dovremmo partire.

Non abbiamo ancora preso una decisione definitiva riguardo all'acclimatamento, pare che ci dedicheremo ad una cima più bassa prima di affrontare l'Ama Dablam, ma non abbiamo ancora deciso quale sarà.

Island Peak o Lobuche sono le scelte più probabili.

Comunque non ci sentiremo soli all' Ama Dablam. Altre 15 spedizioni stanno dirigendo lì proprio ora. Abbiamo anche incontrato un amico, Michele, una guida di Cadore.

A proposito, sembra che a Katmandu ci siano parecchi italiani, soprattutto per il trekking.

Dopo essere arrivati oggi, ci siamo goduti una pausa rinfrescante presso l' ”Expedition bar” Tom e Jerry, dove di solito gli scalatori si incontrano prima e dopo le spedizioni. E ora è il momento di farsi una bella e profonda dormita.
